James Elliot Quinn is an experienced piano tutor specialising in Jazz with his main areas of expertise in harmony, chords & chord voicings, comping, improvisation and soloing techniques.

He does not limit his teaching just to jazz however, and is also available to teach Music Theory and other genres such as Classical, Pop, Rock, Blues and Funk. He also covers areas such as ear training, songwriting/composition, recording/production and sight-reading.

James has a relaxed and informal teaching style and caters his lessons to the goals and wishes of the student, whether they intend to become a full-time professional musician or simply learn how to play some of their favourite tunes.

He is a very strong believer in creativity and freedom of expression when it comes to playing, and therefore tends to teach the general fundamental 'rules' of music before encouraging students to break them (when appropriate!) to fully develop their own musical voice.

Teaching material ranges from a mixture of James’ own material, published method & theory books, and online video content.

James has taught over 100 students privately since he began tutoring in 2015 and has had multiple students achieve music scholarships as well as a 100% pass rate for ABRSM and Trinity Grades.

Lessons can be held either face to face, or online by using a professional home set up utilising multiple camera angles and a sensitive condenser microphone to pick up all subtle details.

"A great teacher is one who realises that he himself is also a student,

whose goal is not to dictate the answers, but to stimulate his students creativity

enough so that they go out and find the answers themselves"

- Herbie Hancock
